June Ward :  The Dog Lover

My name is June and I am the creator of Kumnc Kennels (Perm Reg'd).

I know you would rather hear about my dogs, but if you could spare a little time to get to know me, I promise to fill the website with more dog and puppy info.

I'll try not to bore you too much with my pedigree.  Suffice it to say I am one of four girls -- the second oldest.

I was my father's only “son”.  I was a tom boy and learned to target shoot, fish and do many mechanical things.  We did down river slalom racing in canoes and would go to the Sportsman Show to cast with weights at a bell.

I have always had a dog, a cat and a few smaller caged animals.  There has never been a time in my life when I have not had a pet.   I have two daughters.  One who is as fond as I am about animals.  While my other daughter politely tolerates my dogs.  I have four granddaughters.  They have all spent some time in a whelping box and have on occasion had a nap in a crate with a dog while at a show.   ( Their choice ! )

I live in Hillsburgh Ontario which is just north of Erin.  I breed, show and love two breeds -- Bernese Mountain dogs  and  Leonbergers.

Some of you may have met me already !  Or perhaps you know me from my work in drafting.  I was part of the founding CKC Draft Committee when the sport was opened up to all breeds.  I am a Draft Judge and have been the Zone 6 Ontario West Draft Dog Rep for the CKC since 2002.  I have judged draft tests in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I also teach Draft Seminars and I am a Water Rescue Judge

I first discovered the beautiful Bernese Mountain Dogs from my sister.  She was living in Switzerland and wrote to tell me about these beautiful dogs.  I saw my first Berner here in Ontario in 1989.  Then in 1993, I got my first Berner named Gwen  ( CH Anderlea's Lady Guinevere CD ).  I (we) earned my first CD with her and her championship.

I began breeding Berners in 1995 under the kennel name of KUMNC.

Over the years of my association with Berners, I met a few Leonbergers along the way.  I fell in love with leos and finally got my first one in 2005.  Her name was Grace ( Diosgyori-sziklas Hedy CGN ).  She passed away in December of 2009 -- just five days short of her eighth birthday.  She was a very sweet soul and is dearly missed.

When people ask me the difference between a Leo or a berner, I say "colour!".  Both sleep on the couch with their feet in the air.  Both love to travel and just be part of the family.  The one difference is the Leos love of the water.  Bernese … not so much !   Another slight difference:  the Berner tail is always wagging and the Leo tongue is always hanging out.

My house in Hillsburgh is a big old house that has become owned and renovated by my dogs.  Presently I have three Berners and two Leos living with me. I once again have a cat, the dogs did not seem to care that mice were coming into the house so MT (Kumnc MT cad purrie) had better keep them out.
